In Pakistan’s waterproofing industry, the default assumption is that membrane waterproofing means a propane torch and bitumen rolls being applied to a rooftop. That assumption misses a large and growing category of waterproofing solutions that require no heat, no open flame, and no specialised torch equipment — yet deliver the same or superior waterproofing performance for the right applications.
Cold applied waterproofing membranes are products that bond, cure, or adhere at ambient temperature — without any external heat source. The category includes self-adhesive peel-and-stick bitumen sheet membranes, liquid-applied membranes applied by brush or roller, cold adhesive-bonded sheet membranes, and polymer-modified cementitious slurries. Every one of these products eliminates the fire risk, access restrictions, and skill requirements of torch application — without compromising the waterproofing barrier they form.

What Does Cold Applied Mean?
Cold applied means installed at ambient temperature — no torch, no kettle of hot asphalt, no heat gun required at any stage of the installation. The membrane bonds to the substrate and forms its waterproofing barrier through a mechanism that works entirely at room temperature: pressure-sensitive adhesion, chemical curing, solvent evaporation, or cement hydration — depending on the product type.
Cold application does not mean cold performance. A correctly applied cold applied waterproofing system performs identically to a torch-applied membrane in service — it resists the same hydrostatic water pressure, accommodates the same structural movement, and lasts the same service life. The difference is entirely in the installation method, not the product performance.

There are applications where cold applied membrane is not just an alternative but the only technically or legally appropriate choice. Manholes, confined spaces, applications near combustible substrates, fire-restricted sites, and re-roofing over existing membranes are all situations where torch application is wrong and cold applied is right.
Types of Cold Applied Waterproofing Membrane
Cold applied waterproofing is not a single product — it is a category that includes four distinct product types, each with a different bonding mechanism, application method, and appropriate use case.

Type 01 — Most common cold applied in Pakistan
Self-Adhesive Bitumen Sheet Membrane (Peel-and-Stick)
A modified bitumen sheet membrane — almost always SBS modified for the flexibility needed in cold-applied applications — with a pre-applied pressure-sensitive adhesive layer on the underside, protected by a release film. The release film is peeled away during installation and the membrane is pressed firmly onto the primed substrate. No flame, no kettle, no heating equipment of any kind.
Bond is formed by contact adhesion — the tackified bituminous compound wets the primed concrete surface and flows into microscopic surface irregularities, creating both mechanical interlocking and chemical adhesion. Bond strength continues to develop over the first 24-48 hours as the adhesive layer fully conforms to the substrate.
Bonding mechanism
Pressure-sensitive contact adhesion. Bond forms immediately on contact and strengthens over 24-48 hours. Primer is mandatory.
Critical success factors

Type 02 — Complex geometry and seamless applications
Liquid-Applied Cold Membrane
Liquid waterproofing membranes are applied as a liquid — by brush, roller, trowel, or spray — and cure at ambient temperature to form a seamless, jointless, fully adhered waterproofing layer. Because they are applied as a liquid and cure in place, they conform perfectly to any surface geometry — no cutting, fitting, or lap joint sealing required. This makes them the technically correct choice for surfaces that sheet membranes cannot easily cover: bathroom floors with multiple drain outlets, balconies with complex drainage patterns, water tank interiors, and any surface with multiple pipe penetrations.
The elimination of lap joints is a significant structural advantage — lap joints are the most common failure point in sheet membrane systems, and a liquid applied membrane has none. The seamless film stretches uniformly as the substrate moves, distributing stress across the entire surface rather than concentrating it at discrete joints.
Acrylic-based
Single component, water-based. Brush or roller applied. UV stable. Good for exposed rooftops and wall surfaces. Euroflex UV.
Polyurethane (PU)
One component. Elastic, crack-bridging, seamless. Ideal for complex geometry. Cures by moisture in air. Euroflex PU.
Cementitious slurry
Two-component polymer-modified cement. For water tanks, bathrooms, below-grade. Food-grade certified variant. Euroflex-2C.
Fibre-reinforced slurry
Two-component with embedded fibres for enhanced crack bridging. Podium decks, parking areas, heavy-duty applications. Euroflex FBR.

Type 03 — Large areas, fire-restricted sites
Cold Adhesive Bonded Sheet Membrane
A standard modified bitumen sheet membrane — APP or SBS — bonded to the primed substrate using a solvent-based or water-based cold contact adhesive rather than torch heat. The adhesive is applied to both the substrate and the underside of the membrane, allowed to flash off to a tack-dry state, and the membrane is then pressed into position and rolled firmly.
Cold adhesive application allows the full range of modified bitumen membrane thicknesses to be used without heat — including 4mm and 5mm products that provide greater crack-bridging than the thinner self-adhesive variants. This method is particularly relevant for re-roofing over combustible timber or cement-fibre board decks where torch use is explicitly prohibited, and for large commercial or government sites with stringent fire management requirements during construction.

Type 04 — Negative side, existing basements
Crystalline Cold-Applied Waterproofing
Crystalline waterproofing is applied as a cold slurry or dry-shake to concrete surfaces and penetrates into the concrete matrix, reacting chemically with moisture and calcium compounds to grow insoluble crystals that permanently block capillary pores from within. Unlike all other cold applied membrane types, crystalline treatment does not form a surface layer — it becomes part of the concrete itself and cannot be pushed off by hydrostatic water pressure.
This makes crystalline cold-applied treatment the only viable option for the negative side (interior face) of existing basement walls where water pressure comes from outside — and it is the correct specification precisely because of its cold application method: it can be applied to damp or actively seeping concrete surfaces where no other membrane type can be used.
Where Cold Applied Is the Correct Specification in Pakistan
Cold applied membrane is not a universal substitute for torch application — it is the technically appropriate choice in specific, well-defined situations. These are the applications across Pakistan’s construction industry where cold application is correct.

Basement Walls Before Backfilling
External basement wall waterproofing requires application in the confined space between the concrete wall and the excavation face — often with timber formwork nearby. Torch use risks igniting formwork, pipes, or cables. EuroStick SA-2.00 applied to the primed external wall face eliminates that risk entirely while providing fully bonded positive-side waterproofing.

Propane torch use in confined underground spaces is prohibited under safety regulations — oxygen depletion and carbon monoxide accumulation make open flame work in enclosed spaces genuinely dangerous. Fire-Restricted Construction Sites
Many Pakistan commercial and government construction sites impose fire restrictions during specific phases — when timber formwork is still in place, when gas or electrical systems are partially commissioned, or when adjacent finishes are combustible. Cold applied systems allow waterproofing to proceed without waiting for fire clearance.

Torch application over an existing blistered or delaminating membrane risks overheating the existing layer — igniting trapped gas in voids or causing the existing membrane to bubble and distort beneath the new layer. Bathroom waterproofing — beneath tile screed on bathroom floors and behind tiles on shower walls — requires a material that can be applied in a finished internal space without flames, fumes, or solvent odour. Water Tanks — Underground and Overhead
Concrete water tanks cannot be waterproofed with torch-applied bitumen membrane — the fumes and residue are incompatible with drinking water storage. Existing Basements — Negative Side Treatment
Existing basements where the soil has already been backfilled cannot receive positive-side membrane treatment without major excavation. The only viable solution is negative-side (interior) treatment. Crystalline waterproofing (Europroof Crystal) is the only cold applied treatment that works on the negative side — it penetrates the concrete and works from within, immune to hydrostatic pressure from outside.

Euroflex UV is a cold applied single-component acrylic waterproofing and heat-reflecting coating that can be applied directly to a primed concrete roof surface or over an existing membrane — by roller, brush, or spray. It provides waterproofing combined with solar heat reflectance, reducing roof surface temperature. No flame, no specialist equipment — applied like paint.

Correct Application Process — Self-Adhesive Cold Applied Membrane
The most common cold applied membrane in Pakistan construction is the self-adhesive peel-and-stick sheet. Its application is simple in principle but requires strict adherence to sequence and technique — particularly primer application and roller compression. Skipping either step produces a system that appears complete but will fail significantly faster than specified.

Surface preparation
Concrete must be structurally sound, clean, and completely dry. Remove all form release agents, oil contamination, loose material, and dust. Grind down surface protrusions. Existing cracks wider than 1mm should be routed and filled with compatible repair mortar before membrane application. For cold applied systems this preparation step is more critical than for torch-applied — heat compensates for minor surface imperfections; cold adhesive does not.

Primer — mandatory and never to be skipped
Apply EuroPrime WB/SB primer at 0.2-0.4 L/m² by brush or roller. Allow to dry to a tack-dry state — surface feels slightly sticky to the touch but does not transfer to the finger. This typically takes 30-60 minutes in Pakistan’s climate. Never apply SA membrane to wet-primed or unprimed surfaces. The primer is not optional — it is the bonding interface between the concrete and the adhesive layer. Without it, bond strength is substantially reduced and early delamination is the predictable result.

Positioning and progressive release film removal
Position the roll on the substrate where it will be applied. For horizontal surfaces, unroll loosely, align, then peel the release film back in sections of approximately 500mm at a time — pressing and rolling each section before moving to the next. For vertical surfaces (basement walls), start at the bottom and work upward. Never remove the entire release film before applying — once the adhesive touches the primed surface, repositioning is not possible without damaging either the membrane or the primer. Overlaps must be minimum 80mm side laps and 100mm end laps.

Roller compression — the most commonly skipped step in Pakistan
Immediately after pressing the membrane onto the primed surface, roll the entire applied area using a heavy rubber roller of minimum 25kg. Apply firm, even pressure across the full width in two directions — lengthways and across. Pay particular attention to edges and lap zones. Rolling forces the adhesive into surface irregularities, removes air voids, and increases the contact area — which directly determines bond strength. A membrane pressed by hand without roller compression achieves a fraction of the bond strength of the same membrane with proper roller application. This step is not optional.

Lap sealing and detail work
SA membrane laps are sealed by the adhesive layer of the upper strip bonding to the top surface of the lower strip. Roller pressure at laps must be doubled — run the roller along every lap edge twice. At T-joints and complex intersections, apply EuroSeal rubber mastic sealant. Detail strips at internal and external corners must be applied before the field membrane — not after. Pipe and service penetrations require SA membrane collar pieces wrapped and bonded around each penetration. Termination edges sealed with compatible mastic or termination bar.

Protection — same day as application
Plain-surfaced SA membrane must be protected from UV on the same day as application. On basement wall applications, EuroBoard 4mm or 6mm protection board is bonded over the SA membrane before backfilling. On re-roofing applications, a screed or finishing layer is applied above. Leaving plain SA membrane exposed overnight is acceptable during multi-day projects but extended unprotected exposure in Pakistan’s direct sun will degrade the surface bitumen and reduce lap bond quality.
Applying Liquid Cold Membranes — Key Principles
Liquid membranes have different application requirements from sheet membranes. These are the principles that apply across all Eurobit liquid membrane products:

Minimum two coats, applied perpendicular to each other
The first coat is applied in one direction. The second coat, applied after the first is fully cured (not just surface-dry), is applied perpendicular to the first. This cross-coat application ensures no pinholes coincide between the two layers — any area missed in one coat direction is covered by the other.

Wet film thickness measurement
Each coat must be applied at the specified wet film thickness — not estimated by feel. A wet film thickness gauge (a simple comb gauge available from any waterproofing supplier) is used to verify coverage rate during application. Thin coats are the most common cause of liquid membrane underperformance.

Curing between coats — not surface drying
The second coat must be applied after the first coat has cured — not merely surface-dried. Surface-dry means the film does not transfer to the finger. Cured means the full depth of the coat has set. Applying the second coat over a surface-dry-only first coat traps solvent and can cause adhesion loss between layers.

Reinforce corners and joints with membrane strip
At internal corners, construction joints, and around pipe penetrations, embed a strip of non-woven polyester fabric into the first coat of liquid membrane while still wet. This fabric strip bridges potential stress concentration points and provides reinforcement where liquid membranes are most vulnerable. Remove the fabric strip from the mesh roll, press into wet membrane, smooth, and allow to cure before applying the second coat over it.
