Eurobit Waterproofing Membranes — The Complete Guide to EuroProof APP, SBS & Self-Adhesive Systems

Written by Pakistan’s only manufacturer of modified bitumen membranes in Lahore — so you know exactly what goes on your roof, foundation, or basement.

When a contractor quotes you “waterproofing membrane” for your roof or basement, most homeowners and even many engineers accept the quote without knowing what type of membrane is being specified, how thick it is, what it is reinforced with, or how long it should actually last. This information gap is the reason the same roof gets waterproofed every two or three years — because the wrong product was specified, or the right product was applied incorrectly.

Eurobit manufactures its complete waterproofing membrane range at our own ISO 9001:2015 certified facility in Lahore. We make APP modified membranes, SBS modified membranes, granule surfaced and aluminium surfaced variants, and self-adhesive cold-applied membranes — every product to ASTM international standards, every roll traceable to our own production line.

This guide explains every product in the EuroProof range in plain language — what it is, what it does, when to use it, and why it matters for buildings in Pakistan’s climate.

What Is a Modified Bitumen Membrane?

Bitumen — the black, tar-like material refined from crude oil — has been used in waterproofing for thousands of years. Ancient Mesopotamians used it to waterproof boats. Modern construction uses it in a far more engineered form.

Standard bitumen on its own is brittle at low temperatures and soft and runny at high temperatures — both of which are problems in Pakistan. Modified bitumen solves this by adding polymer compounds that dramatically improve the material’s performance across a wider temperature range and give it elasticity it would not otherwise have.

The result is a product that can be manufactured into flexible rolls, applied to a building surface with heat (torch-applied) or cold adhesive (self-adhesive), and form a seamless, durable waterproof barrier that moves with the structure rather than cracking against it. All Eurobit membranes use polyester reinforcement — a non-woven fibre mat inside the membrane that gives it tensile strength, puncture resistance, and dimensional stability.

APP vs SBS — The Two Types of Modified Bitumen Membrane

All modified bitumen membranes are either APP or SBS modified. Choosing the right type for your climate and application is the single most important technical decision in any waterproofing project.

Atactic Polypropylene

APP Modified Membrane

APP modification adds a plastic polymer (atactic polypropylene) to the bitumen. The result is a harder, stiffer membrane with exceptional high-temperature resistance and excellent UV stability. It performs best in hot climates.

Excellent heat resistance — ideal for Pakistan’s 45°C+ summers

Superior UV resistance — exposed rooftops last longer without surface degradation

Best for flat rooftops, terraces, exposed areas in Lahore and Karachi
×
Less flexible at low temperatures — not ideal for frost-prone areas like Islamabad winters

Best used for
Lahore rooftops, flat terraces, exposed roof areas, covered foundations, basement retaining walls in hot climates

Styrene Butadiene Styrene

SBS Modified Membrane

SBS modification adds a rubber polymer (styrene butadiene styrene) to the bitumen. The result is a softer, more elastic membrane with excellent low-temperature flexibility and superior crack-bridging performance. It behaves more like rubber than plastic.

Superior elasticity — stretches up to 3x its length before tearing

Excellent low-temperature performance — stays flexible in Islamabad winters

Better for structural movement areas — hillside properties, earthquake zones
×
Slightly softer surface — less suited to heavy foot traffic without protection layer

Best used for
Islamabad and northern Pakistan, basements, low-temperature areas, structural movement zones, hillside properties in Bahria Enclave and DHA Islamabad

EuroStick Self-Adhesive Membranes — SA-1.70 & SA-2.00

EuroStick is Eurobit’s cold-applied, peel-and-stick self-adhesive SBS modified bitumen membrane. It provides the same waterproofing performance as torch-applied membranes but is applied without heat — making it the solution of choice in locations where using a propane torch is unsafe, restricted, or impractical.

EuroStick is saturated with a rubberised asphaltic compound and reinforced with non-woven polyester — giving it superior tear strength, puncture resistance, excellent tensile strength, and dimensional stability at low temperatures. It is ideal for tight basement wall applications, manholes, retaining walls, and re-roofing work over existing surfaces.

Where EuroStick is the right choice

Basement walls before backfilling, below-ground concrete structures, manholes, retaining walls, any location where open-flame torch application is restricted by safety regulations or fire risk. Also excellent for re-roofing over existing membranes where torch heat might damage the existing layer below.

Understanding Surface Finishes — Plain, Granule, or Aluminium?

Plain Surface (P Series)

Sand-finished on both sides. Used for covered applications — beneath floor screeds, under protection boards, or below ground. Not suitable for direct UV exposure without a protection layer.

Best for: Basements, foundations, covered roofs

Granule Surface (G Series)

Natural slate or mineral granules embedded in the top surface. Provides excellent UV resistance, weather protection, and slip resistance for walkable rooftop areas. Available in various colours.

Best for: Exposed rooftops, walkable terraces, visible areas

Aluminium Surface (AL Series)

Aluminised polyester film bonded to the top surface. Provides maximum UV protection and excellent solar heat reflectance — measurably reducing roof surface temperature and indoor heat. The premium choice for exposed roofs in Lahore’s extreme summer heat.

Best for: Exposed roofs where heat reduction is a priority alongside waterproofing

Which Thickness Do You Need? — 3mm, 4mm, or 5mm

Membrane thickness is not just about durability — it determines how much bitumen is in the membrane, how much coverage you get per roll, and how effectively it bridges existing cracks and surface irregularities.

3mm
Standard — New Construction

Suitable for new concrete surfaces in good condition with minimal existing cracks. Used as a base layer in two-coat systems. Lightest roll weight — easiest to handle on site.

4mm
Most Used — Repair & New Build

The most commonly specified thickness for Pakistan. Bridges hairline cracks effectively. Suitable as a single-layer system on prepared surfaces or as the top layer in two-coat applications. The best value for most DHA and Bahria Town rooftops.

5mm
Heavy Duty — Severe Conditions

For roofs with significant existing cracking, for car parks and areas with regular wheeled traffic, for basements under severe hydrostatic pressure, or for any application where maximum durability is required.

How EuroProof Membranes Are Applied — The Correct Process

The membrane is only as good as the application. An excellent membrane applied incorrectly will fail. Here is the correct process Eurobit’s trained applicators follow — so you know what to look for when supervising any waterproofing contractor on your project.

1
Surface Preparation

The substrate must be clean, dry, and structurally sound. All dust, oil, loose material, and old failed waterproofing must be removed. Existing cracks wider than 0.3mm should be filled with Euro Repair mortar before membrane application. This step is where most cheap contractors cut corners — and where most membrane failures originate.

2
Primer Application — EuroPrime WB or SB

EuroPrime water-based or solvent-based primer is applied to the prepared concrete surface at 0.2-0.4 L/m². Primer penetrates the concrete surface, seals dust, and creates a bonding bridge between the substrate and the membrane. Without primer, the membrane adhesion is significantly reduced. The primer must be fully dry before membrane application begins.

3
Torch Application of Membrane

The membrane roll is unrolled slightly ahead of the torch flame. The torch heats the underside of the membrane and the primed concrete surface simultaneously — both must reach the correct temperature for the bitumen to flow and bond. The roll is pressed and pushed forward, forming an immediate bond. Each adjacent strip overlaps the previous by a minimum of 80mm on side laps and 100mm on end laps. All laps must be fully sealed with no cold areas.

4
Detail Work — Drains, Penetrations & Upstands

The highest-risk areas of any rooftop waterproofing system are the details — drain collars, pipe penetrations, parapet wall upstands, and corners. Membrane strips are cut and torch-applied around each penetration and carried up parapet walls by a minimum of 250mm. EuroSeal rubber mastic sealant is applied at all critical termination edges. These details take more time than the flat roof area but are the most important part of the job.

5
Inspection & Flood Testing

Once the membrane is fully applied and cooled, all laps and details are inspected visually. On flat rooftops, a flood test (ponding 25mm of water for 24-48 hours) confirms the system is fully watertight before any protection screed or finish is applied above. Eurobit provides written documentation of completed work with product batch numbers for warranty purposes.
